Finding a job appears to be near impossible in the current financial climate. Even the retail outlets in the city do not seem to be taking on temporary staff for Christmas. I checked the job board in the local mall yesterday. Of the five jobs available three were part-time (offering fifteen hours or less per week), one required me to have two years prior experience in a managerial role and the other was in Burger King.
I have handed my CV in at a couple of shops - Past Times, Gamestation, Game - and have been told that Boarders will start recruiting soon which would be nice as I would quite like to work in a bookshop. I'm concerned that my MA is turning shopkeepers off though. My friend's Mum used to work in recruitment and she once told me that if you have a good degree people in retail won't hire you because they assume you to be ambitious and thus would leave quickly to find better prospects. A person without a degree would just settle for what they got. I find this horrendously unfair, as anyone would leave a job if given a better offer, but this is just the way of the world I guess.
I've sent my CV to a temp agency in the city so they can help me. I've also located four other temp agencies which I will visit first (though one of these told me to phone in advance if I'd never had experience working in finance so that one does not sound too promising). I phoned Norwich County Council and asked if they would also send me a temp form, which will hopefully arrive today. I also am going to a job faire tomorrow which seems to be comprised of a lot of retail outlets from the city (I know, for one, that Toys 'R' Us will be recruiting there). I just want to secure a full-time temp job for now. Even if I have to leave in in January at least I'll have been able to save up a bit of money over Christmas...
